TITLE:
CLIN ELEC DERM
The elective presents an introduction to the discipline of dermatology, its terminology, basic concepts and principles of therapy. Didactic lectures introduce the student to dermatologic disorders and the treatments. The student will spend many hours in hospital and private clinics observing the disorders discussed.
PREREQUISITES:

Senior students only.   Students interested in Dermatology/Medicine combined PGY II residency program are advised to take Dermatology in the early part of senior year.

NOTE: Students are not permitted to be absent from this elective without prior permission from  Dr. Russo. Except under special circumstances, absences of more than a few days will be viewed unfavorably. All missed work must be made up! OBJECTIVES

Attitudes :

1) Discuss with understanding the patient's reaction to the diagnosis and his/her expectations of the physician.

2) Develop awareness of the dilemmas that may be faced in explaining the patient’s diagnosis to the patient.

3) Interact appropriately with patients and make every attempt to clearly understand the importance of appropriate behavior and interpretation of a patient's needs.

Other Resources - Other :
The Ruth and Mitchell Ede Award in Dermatology is given each year to a student who in any dermatology course/elective demonstrates outstanding accomplishments in cutaneous biology. The award includes both a medallion and a financial award and is presented at graduation.
Procedures:

1) Evaluate the significance of skin tags that are eruptive, their association with internal neoplasms and, if necessary, remove skin tags in an appropriate fashion demonstrating proper technique.

2) Under the supervision of the clinical faculty, prepare a potassium hydroxide preparation (KOH) on any patient with a papulous squamous disease; demonstrate the proper technique of collecting the sample, using the potassium hydroxide and interpret the slides prepared.

3) Perform Tzanck preparation, an exfoliative cytology technology which is indispensable in the early diagnosis of acanthotic disorders and viral cutaneous lesions. Collect the specimen, stain it, and interpret the results.

4) Take scabies scrapings which are necessary to establish the diagnosis of sarcoptic scabiei infestations; properly collect the specimen using mineral oil and scale; and give an interpretation of the specimens.

5) Perform cutaneous biopsies and know the proper closure of larger biopsy sites and the proper care of smaller biopsy sites.

SCHEDULE NOTE:

1.  Journal Clubs are occasionally scheduled after the Grand Rounds sessions on Thursdays.  Prior to the event, articles will be provided for review.

2. During the month the students are encouraged to attend morning sessions with our residents.  Topics vary during the month and the schedule will be provided at the start of the rotation.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE POLICY

 

Session Attendance for M4 Students

  • Students may miss no more than two days of planned excused absences on a four week rotation without being required to make-up the work, at the discretion of the clerkship/elective/course director or his/her designee.
  • Non-AI Rotations - Per the Student Duty Hours Policy, an average of one day (24 hours) in every seven must be free of clinical responsibilities (including seminars, clinic, rounds, lectures) averaged over a four week period. These days off are assigned by the clerkship director to best align with the site schedule. Students may request to schedule 1 or more of these 4 days for planned absences that fall under 1 of the categories listed below for excused absences during non-AI rotations, in consultation with the course/elective director, who may or may not approve such planned absences.
  • AI Rotations - Per the Student Duty Hours Policy, an average of one day (24 hours) in every seven must be free of clinical responsibilities (including seminars, clinic, rounds, lectures) averaged over a four week period. These days off are assigned by the course director to best align with the site schedule. Students may request to schedule 1 or 2 of these days for planned absences that fall under 1 of the categories listed below for excused absences during AI rotations, in consultation with the course director, who may or may not approve such planned absences. Students must avoid scheduling Step 2 examinations during an Acting Internship.
  • Excused Absences - The following will be considered excused absences:
    • Diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic health services (e.g. doctor appointments, physical therapy, counselling, etc).
    • Personal illness, accident or a major catastrophic event
    • Death or serious illness of immediate family members. Immediate family members, as defined by UC, are Grandparents, Brother, Sister, Brother-in law, Sister-in-law, Daughter-in-law, Son-in-law, Father, Mother, Mother-in-law, Father-in-law, Step-sister, Step-brother, Step-mother, Step-father, Spouse or domestic partner, Child, Grandchild, legal Guardian or other person who stands in place of parent (in Loco Parentis)
  • Whenever possible, planned absences should be requested a minimum of six weeks in advance of the start of the clerkship/elective/course in which the absence will occur; this enables the clerkship/course/elective to help plan for educational event scheduling (e.g. a known appointment could be scheduled around with enough notice and the student might not have any required coursework to make up). Absences requested less than 1 week prior to the planned absence may not be considered for a possible excused absence unless extenuating circumstances prevented the student from providing timely notification per the policy. Students should first submit their request for a planned absence to the clerkship/elective/course director using the online MSSF. All planned/excused absences for any reason should be documented on the MSSF.
  • The COM abides by the UC Religious Observance Policy that respects the religious diversity of its students by providing opportunities, where possible, for accommodation in cases where conflicts exist between students’ religious beliefs/practices and educational activities. In clinical settings, such accommodations must honor the primacy of a commitment to patient care and avoid unduly burdening faculty, staff and the general student population involved in the affected educational and/or patient care activity.
