The pediatric surgical service of the Children's Hospital offers an elective one-month junior internship in pediatric surgery to be signed up on a first-come basis. Junior Interns are assigned patient care responsibilities for those patients admitted on their on-call day. Junior Interns can gain experience with fetal, colorectal, vascular anomalies, and trauma if they have specific interest in those areas.
The junior intern, (JI), functions as an integral part of the pediatric surgical house staff. The JI will see both elective and emergency admissions, be responsible for one admission work-up each day and two admission work-ups the day on emergency call. The JI will be either first or second assistant in the operating room when the patient undergoes operation. The JI will be afforded the opportunity for assisting on additional operations as well. Specific patient care responsibilities commensurate with desires, experience and ability will be assigned. The JI will attend and participate in early morning rounds and one or two teaching conferences each day, Monday through Friday. Outpatients will be seen in the Surgical Clinic.
