A typical work week for a medical student on the pediatric pathology elective runs from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Students are expected to fully engage in all academic activities, including didactic sessions and interdisciplinary conferences, with key academic events occurring on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Each week, students will be assigned to a different clinical service under the supervision of a faculty pathologist (preceptor). They will have the opportunity to preview cases assigned to them and form initial impressions before double-scoping with their preceptor to discuss findings and diagnostic considerations under the microscope.
Autopsies are a key component of pediatric pathology, and students are expected to attend and observe at least one autopsy case during their rotation if available.
Additionally, students are required to attend the internal consensus conferences on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:00 to 3:00 PM, where complex or challenging cases are reviewed. They will also participate in the weekly autopsy QA conference on Thursdays at noon, where cases are reviewed for quality assurance and education.
This structure provides a comprehensive learning experience, blending hands-on casework with academic learning and collaborative discussions.
