The student will be able to:
PREOP:
Perform and write of a focused history and physical with attention to the
anesthetic implications of pediatric physiology and pathology in an ASA(American Society of Anesthesiologists) Physicial Classification I or II pediatric patient
Formulate and discuss an anesthetic plan of a ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) Physicial Status Classification I or II pediatric patient with the anesthesia team
(resident/ fellow/ attending).
Understand how to communicate with developmentally
delayed patients and age-appropriate communication. Practice techniques to
decrease patient and caregiver anxiety. Illustrate different methods of premedication prior to induction.
List at least 3 factors (age, upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, primary pulmonary disease, fever, infectious process, exposure to secondhand smoke) that can increase periopertive respiratory adverse events in a pediatric patient
Recall the preoperative fasting (NPO) guideline times necessary prior to an anesthetic.
INTRAOP:
Describe the stages of anesthesia for an inhalation induction for a pediatric patient
Recognize and discuss signs of a difficult pediatric airway and list methods of managing upper airway obstruction.
Calculate the appropriate endotracheal tube size and know the intubating blade for each age of the pediatric patient.
Discuss the concepts of recognizing signs of a
difficult pediatric airway and managing upper airway obstruction.
Demonstrate proficiency in mask ventilation and show interventions to maintain adequate ventilation
Demonstate manual dexterity in LMA
insertion and demonstrate at least one successful placement of an LMA and intubation in pediatric patients.
Understand when a non-verbal patient is
appropriate for extubation.
Describe signs of laryngospasm and
bronchospasm and list the treatments involved.
PHARMACOLOGY:
Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology, including drugs and doses utilized in Pediatric
anesthesia for sedation, induction, muscle relaxation, opioids and antiemetics. Recognize the treat common
complications of anesthesia in children (e.g., postoperative nausea/vomiting,
pruritis, respiratory depression)
